    Disc-to-Digital

Has anyone tried Walmart's Disc-to-Digital service? I have a collection of family movies that I had transferred from VHS to DVD and now I'm considering going to digital. Is it ok to bring regular DVDs in too like some of our movie collection?

They don't actually convert your movie: You bring in a copy of a COMMERCIAL DVD movie, and they give you access to that movie online. YOU NEVER ACTUALLY GET A DIGITAL COPY OF YOUR MOVIE, that's why you can't "convert" home video. Worse yet, since they still control your access, the "copy" you paid for will never truly belong to you.

There's lots of free software out there that can convert your home-made DVD to true digital. My favorite is Handbrake: http://handbrake.fr/

Thank you for your help. I had no idea. That doesn't sound ideal for what I'm looking for. Exactly how do you get the digital copy from them anyway?

I'll check out Handbrake. Hopefully it won't be too difficult to use.

You don't, really. It's online - so, if you're in a car and want something for the kids to watch, or you're out of range of the internet, you're out of luck. And as noted, if they shut down the service, you no longer have access to that movie.

Just a bad deal all around.

This service is for older people who are not technologically inclined enough to know how to rip DVDs. As usual, Walmart is taking advantage of the misinformed by taking their money, giving them less, and laughing all the way to the bank.

I refuse to deal with Wal-mart at all. They are simply too unethical on many issues for my tastes. I know they aren't alone, but they are the ones that seem to stand out in a lot of negative ways.
