Use Plex Media Server to Stream Personal Media to Roku
Here's how to use Plex, a free tool for streaming media from a PC to a

Playon, both the paid and free versions, will do the same thing, so I see no reason to move to Plex. Has anyone out there used Plex? Have you used both Plex and Playon? If so, how do they compare?

I have both....playon seems to allow live stream were plex only allows website videos.

Plex works awesome. Plays mkv and avi flawlessly.

I use both.
PlayOn is great for online content, and there are a lot of plugins for it. But, it costs money.
Plex excels at streaming from your computer. It has a slick interface that looks up artwork for your media, and supports subtitles. There's also the "Plex It!" button. And it's free.
But- it is still in the "embryonic" stage, takes more effort to set up, and it really needs a lot more computing "horsepower" for online content than PlayOn.
Neither one is going to give you HD quality online content.
